Negombo, I remember

Upendra SwamiApril 29, 2019 1405 Views5

It was painful to watch the aftermath of carnage at St Sebastian’s Church in Negombo. For that matter, heart pained for Sri Lanka as a whole. No innocent people need to die this way anywhere in the world. This bloodshed takes us nowhere but to more bloodshed. It has to end. Period! I felt a connect to Negombo as soon as I heard about the incident. I spent my first night at Negombo on my first trip to Sri Lanka exactly ten years back in 2009. So, my first impressions for this beautiful island nation came from Negombo. It was a also the starting point of a memorable almost a week long road trip of the island nation. Also read: An orphanage for the mighty at Pinnawala Saint Stephen's Church at Negombo which was consecrated in 1880, when Britishers ruled the island nation. Church is ...

Watching Blue Whale and Dolphins at Mirissa

Upendra SwamiDecember 7, 2018 1161 Views0

Have you ever wondered, that how and where you can watch the biggest living animal on this planet without having to part with a fortune! Where you can watch the Blue Whale closest to India? Actually, despite having spotted a Blue Whale some years back off the Malwan coast in Konkan region, there is no place in India from where you can spot whales with regularity, hence there is no whale watching in India as per se. India does have dolphins in large number- fresh water as well as salt water. Fresh water dolphins can be seen in Ganges and Brahmaputra. While ocean dolphins can be seen at Chilika in Odisha and at many places off the coast in Arabian Sea including Goa and Lakshdweep. But even these dolphin sightings are brief and by chance, and that too from quite a distance. Whale watching...

ऊँ at the Colombo World War Cemetery!

Upendra SwamiAugust 27, 2016 2177 Views0

Every city has some hidden gems that normal tourists are unaware of. Every city also has a fabulous history whose all aspects are not known to us. What you need to do is to travel like a local and let yourself soak in the atmosphere. Many a times, while travelling to some secluded, not so popular places, you might not find tourists around you, at least not as much as you would find at popular tourist destinations. But that would be a good chance to know about the insights of culture and history of a place. That’s what happened to us in Colombo. Sri Lanka or erstwhile Ceylon shares a lot with India, in terms of culture and history. Britishers, after controlling whole of India, also occupied Ceylon in early 19th century. They controlled the whole Indian sub-continent as a single territory.

Upendra SwamiJuly 18, 2016 2021 Views7

Another cruise comes India's way and one has to keep the fingers crossed. Europe's number 1 cruising company, Costa Cruises, has announced the highly-anticipated launch of Costa neoClassica in India at a press conference in the Mumbai on Monday. Costa neoClassica will begin homeport cruises from Mumbai from December 2016. The ship will perform a series of weekly sailings from 16th Dec 2016 - 18th March 2017. Among the destinations will be few desi hotspots like Goa and Cochin and popular ones like Maldives and Colombo. India seems to have a love-hate relationship with cruise operators. Its not the first time that a top cruise line is entering the Indian market. This is not even first for the Mumbai. Star Cruise had few sailings to Lakshadweep islands and Goa from Mumbai way back in 20...
