Where a Shah Jahan’s queen lies in solitude on the other side of Taj

Upendra SwamiMarch 13, 2020 7531 Views8

At a very remote corner just outside the boundary of Taj Mahal complex towards its Eastern gate, when you climb the narrow stairs of Sandali Masjid you get an eerie feeling. With monkeys and dogs around, what attracts you more is the presence of a big number of cats, many of them black. Sandali Masjid is also called as Kali Masjid. Mosque is at the one side of the complex, with its back towards the Taj complex across the road. While right in front of the mosque, in the middle of a garden is an octagonal tomb. Its onion shaped dome in white marble signifies that it belongs to someone from the royal family. We are told that it belongs to the first queen of the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan- Kandahari Begum. Platform of Kandahari Begum's tomb You will hardly find any tourists here. F...

Basking in glory : Fatehpur Sikri in lensview

Upendra SwamiJanuary 8, 2017 3396 Views16

It is indeed one of the reminiscence of India's glorious past- one which has been largely well-documentated and one which is largely intact, as is the case with most of the Mughal-era structures of that time. The beauty of this place is that every time you come here, you learn a few new things about the old times, just like sort of revising the history. Every time, it gives you a new perspective in current situations. Well, we are talking about Father Sikri, near Agra which was the capital of great Mughal emperor Akbar. This architectural wonder is located right adjacent to the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, who was the guiding soul of Akbar throughout his life. Both the structures, often visited together, have different identities and different architectural values as well. But both...

In the shadow of a Great King

Upendra SwamiOctober 5, 2015 1098 Views1

Sikandara in Agra is home to one of the greatest kings ever to rule this country- Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar. He was buried here and his tomb is among one of the greatest structures of the era (See: Here lies a great king). One may say that this tomb misses the grandeur of the another tomb Agra is famous for- The Taj, but Sikandara is what Akbar always wished for- peace and tranquility. What lies the another beauty here is that as soon as you turn your back towards the main mausoleum, you will immediately move to another world. With so many deer galloping around you will feel as if you are in a black-buck sanctuary, so oblivious they are to the tourists coming there, in a testimony to the great man, who rests here. Its an altogether different experience, which makes you to spend more and
