Hampi in Monsoon : Images from Hemakuta Hills

Upendra SwamiJuly 23, 2017 2492 Views6

We are in UNESCO World heritage site of Hampi in Karnataka and have already went through the Virupaksha temple which is considered to be the most sacred of Hampi's all temples. Right to the north of Virupaksha temple in Hampi is a big rock face which is known as Hemakuta Hill. It is not a big hill per say, but it is located very strategically. You can have a grand view of the Virupaksha temple and the Hampi Bazar from the top of the hill. There are ruins scattered all around. Also read: Hampi in Monsoon - Virupaksha Temple It is aptly also called as a canvas of rocks. And its actually a very amazing sight of the temple ruins around and the very strange rock formations. This rock hill has small temples, gateways and pavilions scattered all around. There are also remains of a forti

Gajah Museum : A slice of Indonesian culture

Upendra SwamiMay 18, 2016 1934 Views6

In my earlier post about Jakarta, I had mentioned about the National Museum of Indonesia. The building which houses this museum is called as Gedung Gajah because of an elephant statue in the front courtyard of the building. Hence it is often called as Gajah Museum as well. Gajah (गजः) is elephant in Sanskrit. It is one of the most complete museums I have ever visited with everything about country's history, art, culture, heritage, music, sociology, anthropology, architecture, etc. Museum is located very close to the Merdeka Square, which houses the Monas. This is central part of the city with most of the ministries and even the President's House nearby. The museum collection is said to be among the richest, the most complete and the best of its kind in Indonesia and also perhaps one

Stepping into history – Adalaj Vav

Upendra SwamiJanuary 18, 2016 2829 Views15

Adalaj is a suburb of Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Vav is a term in Gujarati which means a step well. This term is also probably derived from hindi term for step well, i.e. Bavari (बावड़ी). Adalaj Vav is among the few remaining step wells in Gujarat and among the most popular ones besides the Rani ki Vav in Patan. Being not so glorious as Rani Ki Vav, Adalaj gets a comparatively less number of tourists. Still it is very preserved, beautiful and an important landmark in the history of Vaghelas. It was built in 1498 AD for Rudabai, wife of Vaghela chief Veer Singh. As per inscription at the well, this Oblong step well runs from south to north. Entry to the Vav is from south through stairs on three sides which descend into a spacious landing with octagonal opening supported on eight pillar...

Unknown Pair of Sculptures by Michelangelo Presented to the World

Upendra SwamiSeptember 28, 2015 1176 Views2

The hitherto unknown pair of sculptures by Michelangelo Buonarroti from 1494 was presented to the public at a media conference on September 8, along with an explanation of the detailed study of the sculptures by the "Art Research Foundation". The study analyzes the plausibility of the object's time of origin using technical and scientific methods. An analysis report on the pigments and bonding agents has been written by Professor Dr. Hermann Kühn of Munich. The examination of the surface and the sequence of layers in the cross sections and their appearance under the microscope clearly verify that the paints represent the first or original polychromy. In addition, the analyses of the pigments and bonding agents confirm the time of origin as circa 1494 and the country of origin as ...

Installations heavy on paintings! – The Art scene

Upendra SwamiMarch 2, 2015 2024 Views3

Art world seems to be getting more and more crazy towards installations. Are paintings loosing out? Installations are jazzy, trendy and perhaps more communicating. Recently concluded Delhi Art Fair also reflected this in a big way. Installations carried big space, bigger price tag and biggest buyers. A look at some of the installations- ‘Music of our Times’ by Surendra Pal Joshi A huge helmet with created with 50,000 safety pins. A steel skeleton pinned with big size pins. A headphone is attached to the helmet. Work signifies life and living in post modern age. ‘Spiderman PK’ by Mukesh Sharma Using computer keys, ropes, ribbons and wires- synthesising materials to explicate a complex idea of a Superman in a straight word narrative! ‘The Enchanted Forest’ by Alex Davis An over
