मरु देश में होली के रंग aka Colours of Holi in Desert!

Upendra SwamiMarch 19, 2019 2333 Views2

Among many different colours of Holi in India, this one is from western end of the Rajasthan, from the heart of the That Desert. This is Tani Holi of Bikaner said to be attached to a more than 300 years old tradition. Nobody knows, how exactly it started, but it is believed here that mythological Holika belonged to Joshi community of Pushkarna Brahmins. Therefore, due to remorse, people of this community in Bikaner don’t go to see the Holika Dahan the evening before the day of colours. They don’t join the festivities until then.

Now to make these people join the spirit of the festival, people from other close & related communities will go to invite the Joshis to be part of the festival of colours. Then, they all will reach to the main Nathusar Gate square of the city. From another Barah Guwaad square a traditional Gair will reach the Nathusar gate. High up and across the square a long rope will be tied. As per the traditions, as the Gair reaches the square, priests will welcome the person from the Joshi community chosen to cut the rope.

Then amidst the showers of colours, people of Kiradu community will lift the person of Joshi community on their shoulders the help him cut the rope (Tank). This rope is said to be symbol of rigidness in their minds against the festival, which is cut. During all this process people will sing traditional couplets and dialogues. It will be colours everywhere. This whole occasion will also remind you of Janmashtami celebrations of Maharashtra.

Interestingly, this festival might would have its roots in some particular communities but gradually people from different communities kept joining it and then it became the festival and tradition of the whole city. Quite different from Holi of Braj-Vrindavan.

But Bikaner has many more colours of this festival. You will rarely find so many different shades of a single festival at one place. Besides, this Tani Holi the festival of Holi continues in Bikaner for nine days. Eight days before the actual day of colours there will be a ‘thamb’ puja at Marunayak Chowk in the city. It marks the start of the festivities. Special puja is also done at the famous Naganechi temple in the city.

No Holi festival in India is complete without an act of drama. There is a particular form of act in this region called as Rammat. This includes a script, many dialogues, songs, couplets and that takes place at different squares of the city.

Another aspect of Bikaner’s Holi is the water festival between Harsh & Vyas sub-caste groups of Pushkarna community. Leather water bags (Dolchi) are used to throw water with full force on others. Even this tradition is said to be almost four hundred years old.
